How To Develop Your Creative Writing Skills

It’s often said that everyone has at least one novel in them but they also often say that there’s nothing scarier than a blank piece of paper!
Knowing where to begin with creative writing can be difficult, so difficult in fact that many people find themselves deterred from even giving it a go, whether that’s down to imposter syndrome, feeling as though they’ve come to the practice too late, the fear of failing… whatever the reason, putting pen to paper can be exceedingly tricky for a lot of us.
But it doesn’t have to be this way and there’s a lot you can do to develop your creative writing skills and feel more motivated to give it a go.
Here are just a few tips and tricks from the SEH Digital team. Enjoy!
1. Keep a journal
Keeping a diary or journal of your daily life will help you get into the habit of writing regularly without having to worry about coming up with a storyline. You might even find your own life inspires a few short stories here and there!
2. Read more
Reading different books (fiction and non-fiction) from a range of different writers can be incredibly inspiring and make you want to give it a go yourself. As you read, think about structure, plot weaving, character development and other literary techniques you could incorporate in your own work.
3. Talk to other writers
Instead of joining a book club, see if there’s a writing club you can find either online or in your local area. These groups are always really supportive and are always happy to hear any ideas you might have. You’re sure to find it a valuable resource - and you’ll make new likeminded friends at the same time.
